TSMC has experienced a significant breach of its cutting-edge chip technologies in recent days. It is now claimed that Japanese chip firms, particularly Rapidus, might be involved.
TSMC’s 2nm Data Breach Might Have Benefited The Likes of Japan’s Rapidus; Nine Engineers Have Been Arrested
TSMC is having a challenging time. Internal employees allegedly leaked the company’s trade secrets, compromising the exclusivity of its 2nm process. Based on a report by the Taiwan Economic Daily, nine engineers responsible for the breach were caught at a coffee shop. The methodology they used to steal information was surprising.
The employees involved worked remotely using firm-owned laptops and logged into TSMC’s database from home. They then used their phones to capture images of sensitive data. Over 400 images involving TSMC’s advanced 2nm process were leaked, containing details about trial production and the specifics of the technology. One source claims that employees had a system downtime of just three minutes, accessing only the 2nm database.

While some suspected that China or Russia was involved in this breach, Taiwanese sources indicate that the information has been transferred to Japanese chip firms, notably Rapidus. One of the detained employees was a former Tokyo Electron employee. Although it remains unproven whether the breach benefited Japan, Rapidus has made quick advancements with its 2nm process for reference.
TSMC’s experience with such a breach highlights that the company is at the center of geopolitical influence and must enhance its security measures given its cutting-edge technology.
