TSMC’s Eco-Friendly Changes Have Restored Wildlife Around Its Taiwan Fab Facilities
TSMC, a global semiconductor giant, has taken significant steps to ensure its operations do not harm the natural ecosystem around its facilities. The company’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Sustainability presented TSMC’s exclusive honey jars at the ‘2025 Asia Pacific Sustainability Expo’. These jars were made in collaboration with local beekeepers and Tunghai University.
TSMC claims that, alongside advancing process nodes rapidly, it is their responsibility to maintain the balance of nature around their factories. To demonstrate its efforts, TSMC displayed ‘Ji Mi’ honey jars at the Expo, which come in various flavors. The company’s green manufacturing initiatives have yielded impressive results, helping restore endangered species near its water fabs.
Water management is critical for fabs like TSMC. It is the second most essential resource after electricity for wafer treatment processes such as lithography, etching, deposition, and polishing. TSMC has implemented a more sustainable approach to water management, achieving a high recovery rate of up to 90% in its 12-inch fabs by 2030. The recycled water replacement rate is set to increase to 30%.
It’s remarkable to see companies like TSMC prioritizing the environment. These efforts have indeed resulted in ‘sweet’ honey from their fab workers, who are now bees.
