In 2021, Uber partnered with Motional, a joint venture between Aptiv and Hyundai, where all-electric IONIQ 5 robotaxis operate on the Uber network. More recently, Uber inked partnerships with Nuro and Lucid Group, deploying autonomy stacks on EVs from Lucid to create robotaxi services operating on Uber’s network.
Tesla has launched its bespoke robotaxi service in a geofenced area of Austin, Texas, equipped with teleoperators and physical attendants. It also initiated a manned ride-sharing service in the Bay Area. On CNBC, Khosrowshahi stated that Uber and Tesla could either be partners or competitors in the robotaxi sphere, noting that trillion-dollar total addressable markets (TAMs) won’t witness “winner takes all” dynamics.
NVIDIA’s dominance in AI silicon further complicates this thesis, as it commands a significant share of the market. However, Goldman Sachs’ Mark Delaney believes robotaxis will capture only $7 billion of the 2030 US rideshare market, which is valued at approximately $58 billion and expected to grow to $336 billion by 2030.
Despite this, the sector could eventually represent a TAM worth trillions of dollars.
