According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukraine targeted an “industrial” site in Saratov, a city hundreds of miles from Ukrainian territory. The region’s governor reported one death and damage to an industrial building. A former Ukrainian security official told Newsweek that an oil refinery was still burning after the attack.
Ukraine frequently targets Russia’s military and industrial sites with long-range drones, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s war effort against Ukraine. Kyiv has repeatedly focused on Russian oil refineries in Saratov and Engels, a major hub for strategic bombers. Despite Western sanctions, Russia’s oil sector remains significant in the global market.
The governor of Saratov, Roman Busargin, stated that one person died and an industrial building suffered unspecified damage. A drone landed in a residential courtyard, prompting residents to evacuate temporarily to a local school. The outside of the building was damaged, with several parked cars set ablaze. An image posted by Andriy Kovalenko showed smoke rising from what appeared to be an industrial site.
One Russian military blogger claimed that Saratov’s oil refinery was heavily hit by Ukrainian attack drones overnight, with multiple pillars of smoke and active fires reported. Ivan Stupak, a former official with Ukraine’s SBU security service, said Kyiv aimed to cause as much economic disruption as possible. Russia’s Defense Ministry announced it had intercepted 121 Ukrainian drones over various regions, including Saratov.
The federal air transport agency in Russia imposed temporary restrictions on the airport at Saratov after the attack. Separately, Kyiv claimed to have recaptured Bezsalivka, a village near the border with Russia. Moscow has been pushing into northern Sumy since rolling back Ukraine’s presence in Kursk earlier this year.
