The first three F-35 stealth fighter jets designed for operations from Japanese aircraft carriers arrived in Japan on Thursday. This move is part of Tokyo’s efforts to bolster its defense, especially amid growing Chinese military threats to remote southwestern islands.
Why It Matters
Japan, a key ally in the U.S.’ strategy to contain China’s military expansion, is converting two helicopter carriers—JS Izumo and JS Kaga—into aircraft carriers. Both are planned to operate F-35B jets, which can perform short takeoffs and vertical landings. Only a limited number of airfields on Japan’s southwestern islands can support conventional fighter operations. Given their proximity to Taiwan, these islands would be vulnerable if used for U.S. military operations in a potential conflict with China.
In addition, Japan has ordered 42 F-35B aircraft and procured 105 F-35A jets for its air force, making it the second-largest operator of Lockheed Martin-built F-35s globally. The Japanese F-35Bs landed at Nyutabaru Air Base on Kyushu’s eastern coast.
What To Know
The jets are expected to be deployed aboard the Izumo in 2027 and the Kaga in 2028, according to Lockheed Martin. A fourth jet is anticipated to arrive soon.
Meanwhile, the Kaga is participating in a multinational naval war game with two other F-35B-capable ships: USS America and HMS Prince of Wales.
Separately, on Thursday, a Japanese F-2A fighter jet crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Ibaraki prefecture. The pilot ejected and was rescued, prompting the Japan Air Self-Defense Force to ground all 90 F-2A jets except those needed for urgent duties.
What People Are Saying
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force tweeted that it will continue refining and strengthening Japan’s air capability through the deployment of F-35B jets. Lockheed Martin stated that the F-35 Lightning II is designed to counter advanced threats, making it ideal for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
What Happens Next
The U.S. and Japan may accelerate the delivery of F-35B jets as China expands its military presence across the western Pacific.
