Since its 1913 inception, the Rose Garden has hosted numerous presidential events. However, under Trump’s direction, it was recently paved over while rose bushes and other vegetation remain on its periphery.
“Great reviews of the Rose Garden,” Trump told reporters on August 3, adding that the grassy lawn presented challenges when hosting events due to mud and dampness. “When we had a press conference, you’d sink into the mud. It was very wet and always took three, four, or five days to dry out.”
The new stone patio at the Rose Garden resembles one at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s resort in Florida.
Trump explained, “It’s a beautiful white stone that matches the White House itself. Because it’s so white, it will reflect heat and not be very hot. Yeah, we’ve got great reviews of the Rose Garden.”
The White House has not disclosed the cost of this renovation project, which is funded by the Trust for the National Mall, a nonprofit organization.
In related news, Trump recently announced plans for a $200 million ballroom on the east side of the White House. Construction is set to begin in September and will be financed with private donations.
This year has also seen other cosmetic changes at the White House, including renovations to the Oval Office and the addition of two flagpoles on the north and south lawns.
