Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old former straight-A student from Utah, is accused of shooting and killing conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. The details emerged on September 12 after authorities announced his arrest in connection with Kirk’s murder.
Robinson shot Kirk during a public appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem on September 10. A bullet inscribed with a niche online meme was found among the ammunition recovered from the scene, suggesting that Robinson’s actions were influenced by internet culture and meme subculture.
The accused shooter had become more politically active and angry before the shooting, according to his high school classmate Xander Luke. Luke said Robinson thought both political sides contributed to making the country worse.
Robinson was captured after a family member contacted authorities through a friend who claimed Robinson had confessed or implied involvement in the incident. The arrest occurred at 10 p.m. local time on September 11, as reported by FBI Director Kash Patel.
Authorities tied Robinson to the crime through online messages, interviews with his family members and friends, and surveillance video. The messages included some sent on Discord, a popular online chatting platform, although Discord disputed these claims later.
The bullet casings found at the scene were engraved with various messages that reflect internet culture:
– “Notices bulges OwO What’s This?” referencing an internet meme.
– “Oh bella ciao, Bella Ciao” from an antifascist Italian resistance song.
– “Hey fascist! Catch!” and a series of arrows pointing up, right, down, down, and down, likely referring to the cooperative shooter video game Helldivers 2.
Tom Chittum, a former ATF Associate Deputy Director, noted that .30-06 is a common hunting caliber often used for deer hunting. However, with modern optics and practice, it can be an effective long-range weapon.
Robinson’s family and community expressed shock and disbelief at his actions. Jaida Funk, who knew Robinson since kindergarten, described him as respectful and kind to everyone.
State prosecutors may seek the death penalty in this case with Trump’s support. Utah uses lethal injection for executions but has a firing squad alternative if needed due to a drug shortage.
Discord removed the suspect’s account for violating off-platform behavior policies but denied sharing any planning details related to the shooting incident.
Police conducted searches of Robinson’s home, removing items and taking statements from family members throughout September 12. A court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, September 16, at 3 p.m. local time.
