The recent issues with Windows 11 and SSDs have taken a new turn. According to Microsoft, its latest security update did not affect storage drives at all, but consumer reports say otherwise.
#### Microsoft Is Unable to Reproduce SSD Crashes With the New Security Updates, Ruling Out Their Involvement
For those unaware, the recent ‘KB5063878’ security update caused some SSDs to crash, specifically during high-volume write operations. The issue was not vendor-specific; it affected anyone with an SSD. Microsoft has now issued a service alert (via BleepingComputer), stating that they are unable to reproduce the issue and have found no connection between SSD crashes and the latest security updates.
According to Microsoft’s internal testing, installing the latest Windows 11 security update poses no threat to consumer SSDs; however, on-the-ground reports tell a different story. Initially, it was claimed that the issue is specific to Phison-based SSDs. But after extensive collaboration with Phison, the manufacturer reported that they were unable to reproduce the problem on their SSDs after 4,500 cumulative testing hours for the ‘KB5063878’ and ‘KB5062660’ updates.
Phison also noted that SSDs might have been compromised due to being in extended periods of workloads without proper cooling. This could have caused heat-related failures. For now, there is no solid reasoning behind the problem since both SSD manufacturers and Microsoft cannot replicate it on their testing systems. However, many public forum reports indicate that SSDs were bricked during the security update period.
### Advice
We advise our readers not to operate SSDs under intense workloads, as this is claimed to be one of the factors contributing to the crashes. We will continue to monitor how the situation evolves and keep you updated.
