The Magnus APU is expected to power both the Xbox next-generation console and a range of Xbox PCs, providing a significant advantage for AMD.
On the NeoGAF forums, known AMD leaker Kepler L2 confirmed that the Magnus APU leaked last month will not only drive the upcoming Microsoft console but also “Xbox PCs,” with AMD licensing the APU to OEM partners. As another insider, HeisenbergFX4, believes there won’t be any special development required for the Xbox next-generation console, since no developer would invest additional work for what is likely a small, niche market.
Having a desktop chiplet powering both the next-generation Xbox system and regular Xbox-branded PCs will be a major win for AMD. Production numbers are expected to be high, and AMD could secure better prices from TSMC while benefiting from optimization work done for the Xbox next-generation system. Considering current game optimization issues in the PC space, this could also become a strong marketing point for the company and the Xbox partner OEMs.
The Magnus APU is set to revolutionize the console space with its chiplet design, featuring separate CPU and GPU dies. This approach allows Microsoft to offer more frequent upgrades and potentially do away with traditional console cycles. With console-exclusive games becoming less common, it’s unsurprising that all console manufacturers are taking different paths. The next generation of consoles is likely to be one of the most interesting yet.
